During an unusually stormy New Mexico weekend, the sun made a welcome appearance for the Academy’s fifty-fifth Commencement ceremony, as 149 graduates in the Class of 2014 received their diplomas. Close to 2,500 guests filled the traditional Commencement tent on the Academy campus, with another 150 across the country and world watching via livestream.
D. Ian McKinnon ’85 delivered the Commencement address, inspiring graduates, friends, and family members with an explanation of his “homegrown acronym of three letters, SFF, or SF-squared …” Read Ian’s speech here.
Prior to the Commencement ceremony, Ian and his wife Sonnet Goodenough ’89 McKinnon, were honored at the official dedication of McKinnon Hall on the East Campus. The Academy named McKinnon Hall last year in recognition of Ian and Sonnet’s $10 million gift to the school. Robed faculty, staff, and trustees gathered for the ribbon cutting and brief remarks before heading down the walkway to lead the Commencement processional.4
